Patent Attorney

Otago Innovation Limited is the commercialisation arm of the University of Otago. We are responsible for commercialising the ground-breaking research discoveries made by the University's renowned academic community. Located on the Dunedin campus, we are a small team of commercialisation professionals.

Otago Innovation is looking for a suitably experienced and enthusiastic registered patent attorney to provide support to our commercialisation team and to manage our IP portfolio. 

This exciting and varied role reports to the CEO.

Amongst other things, you will be required to draw on your experience as a patent attorney to provide IP advice internally to the Otago Innovation team. 


Specifically, you will work with our commercialisation managers to:

  • identify protectable intellectual property rights which align with commercialisation opportunities
  • undertake preliminary patentability and freedom to operate analyses
  • advise on technical data requirements to support IP capture 
  • develop and manage IP capture strategies, including the drafting/filing of new patent applications*
  • advise on IP ownership and inventorship issues
  • advise on validity and infringement issues as part of investor due diligence

 *with or without the engagement of external IP counsel

You will also be required to:

  • manage Otago Innovation Limited’s existing patent portfolio
  • provide educational IP seminars internally and externally
  • provide support, as required, to Otago Innovation's start-up companies


You will be an important point of contact for:

  • Otago Innovation's commercialisation managers
  • University of Otago's Research & Enterprise Office
  • external patent attorneys & lawyers
  • academic inventors
  • licensees or licensors, and
  • investors and funding bodies


 The person being sought:

  • must be a registered patent attorney, and 
  • hold an appropriate life science qualification, preferably a masters or doctorate

  • have a commitment to producing quality work that will enhance our commercialisation processes and success
  • be capable of educating a wide range of stakeholders on IP matters
  • enjoy learning from and assisting others, and 
  • be a team player who enjoys being part of a small and vibrant team
